Too much watering, too little watering, watering during a rain event—these are wasteful and costly system issues that affect many landscapes. When water is used so wastefully, money is lost and plants suffer, too.
Solve these problems with smart watering solutions that help make more landscapes water-efficient. As Ewing’s Smart Irrigation Month specials arrive, now is the perfect opportunity to start saving more water and money.
Start with sprinkler nozzles for appropriate and even coverage
When the watering rates in an irrigation system are too low or too high, the landscape can suffer. But with water-smart heads and nozzles, you can maintain appropriate irrigation rates and boost the health of the landscape.
What makes these products smart? They create larger water drops or streams, which are more resistant to wind and will soak into the soil more easily.
Water-efficient sprinklers and nozzles can reduce water use by 30 percent compared to traditional spray nozzles. Your local Ewing store can help you choose the right application for your irrigation system, such as Hunter’s MP Rotator, Rain Bird’s HE-VAN or R-VAN, or Toro’s Precision Rotating nozzle.

Get smart with a smart controller
A smart controller automatically adjusts watering schedules to match changes in weather and in the seasons. It does this by collecting data from sensors, or current weather data in your area.
A newly introduced option is the Gen 2 controller from Rachio. With the free Rachio app on your smartphone, you can control this ET-based controller from anywhere.
Clients can easily connect a Rachio controller to Wi-Fi using the Rachio app on their device. Once Rachio has been set up on a client’s device, they can share access with you using your email address, so you’ll never have to ask for your clients’ passwords. This allows you to manage their sites remotely.
“Rachio allows you the flexibility to change the system’s settings as you see fit,” said Wes Tackenberg, manager at Ewing’s Plano, Tex., location. “There’s no need to make extra trips and ask homeowners to let you in the garage to access the controller.”
“Many of our customers who bought Rachio use it for sites they maintain on a regular basis. They can access the controller and make inspections without having to involve the homeowner,” said Ronnie Wright, manager at Ewing’s Lewisville, Tex.
Save more with sensors
Whether designed to detect rainfall, moisture in the soil, or freezing temperatures, sensors all have the same purpose—to avoid overwatering. You can create even more water savings with combinations like a rain sensor and soil moisture sensor.
The specific needs of your site will determine which sensors are best. Check out different sensor options at your local Ewing store, such as:
- Baseline’s WaterTec S1000 Soil Moisture Kit
- Hunter’s Mini-Clik Rain Sensor
- Rain Bird’s Wireless Rain and Freeze Combo Sensor
