Sept. 05, 2017, PHOENIX—In 2012, during the height of California’s recent drought and call for responsible water usage, the San Luis Coastal Unified School District decided to evaluate its current water usage. By 2017, through research and well-established partnerships, the district has saved more than 14 million gallons of water.

Their research lead them to the Baseline irrigation system, and with the help of a grant provided by the Cachuma Resource Conservation District, the school partnered with Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply in order to upgrade the system on the district’s 17 school campuses.

Fast forward to 2017, and the district is witnessing amazing results.

Joe Carerra, Irrigation Water Resource Specialist for the San Luis Coastal Unified School District said, “Over the last two years, we’ve cut our water bill in half and kept things green, just by being more efficient with our water.”

How much water does that amount to? A recent case study revealed the school saved an estimated 14,233,651 gallons.

Carerra emphasized that the results seen are the product of teamwork.

“This wouldn’t have been possible without the grounds department, our onsite plumber and my contacts at Ewing, Phil Chan and Levi Marks. Everyone is dedicated to water savings and conservation,” Carrrera said.

The next step in the school’s process is to install Baseline hydrometers, a move that Carerra said can help them prevent additional thousands of dollars of water waste from leaks.

“We’re only scratching the surface of what these controllers can do for us,” he said. “Investing in the Baseline irrigation system is not only accomplishing saving water, it’s saving money and labor for the school as well.”
