Labor is often cited as a challenge for many growing landscaping companies. From employees who come and go with the seasons to changing regulations, it can be hard to maintain teams that can help you grow your business.

While it might be a business owner’s biggest challenge, here are three reasons you should make employee retention and satisfaction a number one priority.

  1. You can’t do it all yourself.

The first, and probably the most important, reason growing your business requires long term, satisfied employees is because you can’t do it all yourself. If you’re looking to grow and expand your business, you will need to have a reliable team behind you.

Being able to share responsibilities, bounce ideas around and rely on another person to get the day-to-day done, is critical to the growth of a company.

  1. Happy employees will stay longer and refer other employees.

When you create a strong company culture that increases employee satisfaction, your employees will want to continue working at your company longer. This means, less on boarding costs, it means retaining company knowledge in people other than yourself and a more experienced team.

In addition, long-term employees are more likely to refer friends and family to the business as well, which increases commitment in those employees and provides access to a more reliable hiring pool.

  1. You build trust, which will build your business.

In business, trust can make or break you. Having a team of satisfied employees behind you who trust that you have their best interest in mind will help you take your company to the next level. With trust comes greater day-to-day performance, innovative ideas and the excitement to try new things. All of this is important for any budding or growing company.

How to improve employee satisfaction:

  • Set manageable goals for your employees.
  • Perform regular employee interviews and reviews.
  • Follow up on problems or issues your employees present to you.
  • Provide rewards (monetary and other) for good work.
  • Extend trust by giving strong employees more responsibility.
  • Have fun with your employees.
